When it comes to job searching there are typically three excuses people use to explain why they cannot get a job. These include resumes, the economy, and the wrong degree (lack of experience). Although these may contribute to your unemployment, these are not the sole reason you cannot get a job.

Debunking the Excuses

The Resume – Your resume was never intended to find you a job. The purpose of a resume is for a potential employer to quickly understand your employment history.

The Economy – Currently the unemployment rate is 7.5% and I understand that is statistically high, but the EMPLOYMENT rate must be 92.5%. I believe you must be in the top 92.5% of the work force, right? [Read more...]

Two Keys to be More Successful Faster

Successful

Successful Someone said the books you read and the people you meet will determine where you will be five years from now. I don’t necessarily know if this means you will be a sex addict with a drinking problem if you read sleazy romance novels like 50 Shades of Grey, but I think this is a good philosophy.

Unfortunately, according to a survey by the Jenkins Group, 33% of high school graduates and 42% of college graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives. Additionally, it is estimated 80% of people never read a meaningful book after graduation.

If these statistics are true then they are sad, but it also gives you a great opportunity to leap over the average person. I understand you only have a finite amount of time, but if you focus on certain activities then you can change your life by leaps and bounds.

Just a few years ago after a family tragedy, my life started to spin out of control. My income dropped tens of thousands of dollars, time was spent on reality television, and I did nothing to improve myself. Luckily I woke up and started to make some changes in my life…I started reading and meeting more people.

Now fast forward three years; I have a job I love, spend more time with my family, run in races, sold a business, wrote a book, and started this blog. Reading and meeting people changed my life. It can change yours too. Here is what you need to do:

Learning

For most people their education stops after they receive their diploma, but to be successful you can never stop learning. You will become more successful, faster than anyone if you continue learning. [Read more...]

10 Reasons You Need LinkedIn

LinkedIn

LinkedInAlmost everyone I know has a Facebook account (including my 80 year old grandmother), a Twitter handle, and a My Space profile they forgot to close down. However, the most beneficial social media site for your business and career is typically the site given the least attention – LinkedIn.

I feel that many times LinkedIn is treated like the red headed step child of social media. People will spend more time on Facebook trying to impress people they don’t care about rather than taking that time to learn how LinkedIn will help them succeed. Many times people create the account, add their current title, and expect miracles to happen.

Maybe you believe me and maybe you don’t, but I got my last two jobs utilizing LinkedIn. Here are 10 reason you need to be on LinkedIn.

1)  Improves Online Exposure

Facebook and Twitter are great, but LinkedIn is for the professional. A potential employer or customer may look you up on LinkedIn and if you are not there they may wonder what you are hiding. It may not be fair, but perception is everything.

2)  Networking

Ten years ago you never would have been able to connect with people so easily. Now you can live in Ohio and create connections in Paris. The power of networking on LinkedIn is crazy.

3)  Research

This is a great site to start looking into companies where you want to work or where you want to do business. You can find out virtually everything you want to know about them.

4)  You Are Able To Brag

It is annoying on Facebook when people brag because we have to hear about their “perfect life”. LinkedIn is different…you are supposed to brag. People want to see what you are good at doing and why. [Read more...]

Formula for Success

Here is a simple formula for success:

Three Ways to Overcome Failure

Failure

FailureAbout 35 years ago, a young man was sprinting through the halls of his high school to check out the roster by the gym. His heart was pounding and he was sweating profusely as he saw the roster from a distance tacked up on the board.

This roster was important because it would determine his future and accomplish his dream of making the high school basketball team. He read the list multiple times, but each time he never saw his name. He failed…he did not make the team.

After that day he could have given up. The coaches made it clear he wasn’t good enough to play basketball. However, during the course of the next year, he practiced 4-6 hours every day. He would practice in the rain, shovel the snow, and sweat during 100 degree summers. Everyday he would practice every move, every shot to ensure he would make the team next year.

As you may know, the following year Michael Jordan made his high school basketball team and went on to become the best basketball player of all time. He did this all because of failure!

It’s funny how failure affects people differently. What if Michael Jordan would have given up after he saw he didn’t make the team? We may be living in a world without Air Jordan shoes, a player with six championships, and the movie Space Jam (ok..we could all live without Space Jam, but you get the idea)!

Embrace Failure

Failing has such a negative connotation, but we need to start embracing failure. Many times we can come out better people, more motivated, and with better clarity. Personally, I know each time I have failed in my life it has helped me grow as a person.

In the book The Happiness Advantage, Sawn Achor, states, “The people who can most successfully get themselves up off the mat are those who define themselves not by what has happened to them, but by what they can make out of what has happened. These are the people who actually use adversity to find a path forward. They speak not just of “bouncing back”, but “bouncing forward.” [Read more...]

Four Things More Important Than A Degree

Diploma

DiplomaSince we were little we have learned that a college diploma is like the Golden Ticket in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We were taught that once we receive our acceptance letter, get good grades, and put in four years to get our degree; then our life will be set.

Personally, I imagined when I graduated from Kent State University in 2001 with a degree in finance getting a job would rival the NFL Draft. My dilusional thoughts had me believe I would attend a career fair, hand out some resumes, charm potential employers, and have them fight for me. Unfortunately my job hunting was nothing like the draft and my degree never entitled me to anything!

We are learning more and more that a college degree is not the only factor in succeeding in work and life. According to a recent study there are more than 5,000 janitors with PhDs in the United States (last time I checked you don’t need seven years of advanced schooling to sweep floors). Additionally, I personally know three people with master degrees who pour my coffee at Starbucks every morning.

I am not trying to put down anyone’s career (especially anyone at Starbucks because brewing my Blonde Roast is important me), but a college degree won’t guarantee you success anymore. I A college degree is important, but there are four things more important than your degree.

Your Tribe

If you are looking for a job do you think it would be easier if you had built a Tribe of people who like you or the only people you know are your current associates?

Whether you are a freshman in college or have been at the same job for 20 years, start building a tribe. Seek out mentors, friends, and people who believe in you. Even if you haven’t talked to someone in two years, reach out to them and see how they’re doing.

Today it is easier than ever with Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Meetup. You should be able to meet and more importantly stay connected to more people.

If you can do this then getting a new job or starting a new business becomes much easier. [Read more...]

Jimmy V Speech Heard Round the World

Yesterday I was watching ESPN 30 for 30 chronicling the amazing 1983 North Carolina State men’s basketball championship. No doubt that is one of the most amazing runs in sports history, but what is more amazing is the head coach, Jimmy Valvone (Jimmy V), 1993 ESPY speech.

If you haven’t had chance to watch the his amazing speech, please take 10 minutes and press play. Although it is 20 years old, I believe it is all relevant.

There are many great parts to the speech, but what hits me the most are his three keys to living a great life. I think at times we make life more difficult than it has be. We take what God has given us and in many cases turn it into 30-50 years of stress.

Our lives can be filled with happiness, joy, and fulfillment. It is possible…I see it all the time. The problem is we focus on all the wrong things. As a society we want to advance up the corporate ladder no matter the cost (I did because I thought that was what I was supposed to do). We work non-stop so we can have all the “things” our hearts desire. After we buy our first house, we immediately start thinking about buying our next bigger and better house. Then the cycle repeats.
